Initiative to develop Sonamarg into an all-season tourist attraction gains momentum

Kashmir Valley is popular for its year-round tourism. Destinations like Gulmarg, Srinagar and Pahalgam vow tourists with their allure all throughout the season. However, this year authorities are dedicating efforts to enhance the visitor experience in Sonamarg. Historically, fewer tourists venture to this region during winter due to its harsh cold and heavy snowfall.

The Jammu & Kashmir Department of Tourism, in collaboration with key stakeholders such as the Sonamarg Development Authority, JKTDC, PDD, and BECON is actively finalizing preparations to boost winter tourism in the area. Their collective focus is to ensure that Sonamarg is equipped with the necessary facilities and services to accommodate tourists, aiming to make it a more inviting destination during the winter season.

There is an increasing focus on planning essential preparations, including provisions for electricity, water, healthcare, road maintenance, fire service, traffic management, snow clearing operation, operationalization of Z-Morh Tunnel, firewood and other related facilities and necessary arrangements to sustain Sonamarg’s accessibility throughout the winter months.

Authorities are also focusing on promoting recreational activities in Sonamarg along with planning the winter festival at Sonamarg in order to boost tourism in the area.

Seeing the efforts being made by the authorities, Sonamarg is sure to emerge as a popular year-round tourist destination in Kashmir Valley offering a wholesome experience to tourists.
