ATTRACTION OF LADAKH: ZOJI LA PASS
Measuring around 9km in length and reaching over 11,500ft above the sea level, Zoji La Pass is considered as one of the most enthralling passes in the entire world. Located on National Highway 1D or the Srinagar-Leh Highway, it is revered as the second highest mountain pass on this route after the Fotu La Pass.
A major link between Ladakh and the rest of the country, this pass is definitely not for the ones who are new to driving or riding! With challenges varying from medium to extreme levels, one needs to have expert driving or riding skills while passing through the Zoji La Pass. In addition to the adventure quotient, it also offers enchanting views of the snow-clad peaks and mountains within the vicinity.
Due to heavy snowfall, Zoji La Pass experiences a major setback during the winters and remain closed throughout the season. However, with the rigorous efforts of Border Roads Organisation (BRO), visitors can expect a year-round communication through the pass.
Zoji La Pass also plays an important role in safeguarding the defence line of India. Though it was once; in 1947, occupied by Pakistani armies, it was later recaptured by our brave soldiers in an assault coded as ‘Operation Bison’.
