ATTRACTION OF LADAKH: SPITUK MONASTERY
One of the closest monasteries to Leh, Spituk Monastery is another devoted centres for the Gelugpa Buddhists in Ladakh. Built during the 11th century, it looks totally mesmerising with the greater Himalayas as its backdrop. Founded by Od-De, the elder brother of Lha Lama Changchung Od, it has three branches and is a home to around 100 monks.
In addition to its sanctity and marvellous architecture, it is also known for its vast collection of thangkas, masks and other antiques. Spituk Monastery turns into a riot of colours during the New Year Festival, wherein Cham or Mask Dances are performed by the lamas of the monastery.
