ATTRACTION OF LADAKH: SANKAR MONASTERY

Nestled amidst the scenic fields and guarded by rugged mountains, Sankar Monastery is one of the most accessible monasteries in Ladakh. Located only 3km from the heart of Leh, it is the residence of KushokBakul or the head of Gelug-pa sect of Buddhism.

Reachable through a series of steps, the monastery overlooks the mighty Khardung-La Pass and attracts religious preachers and tourists from across the globe. Both the interior and exterior of Sankar Monastery are decorated with detailed frescos, murals and paintings. Some of these paintings comprises of Tibetan calendar, rules to be followed by the monks and much more. Visitors can also find the effigy of Goddess Tara, the main deity of Sankar Monastery above the Du Khang, with 1,000 arms and 1,000 heads.
