Alright, so now that you are totally convinced to take the family to Ladakh, let us get down to the nitty-gritty of making this trip unforgettable.
Ladakh is a high-altitude cold desert that can put some stress on your body. This means, your body needs to toughen up and adapt to this unique environment to make the most of your Ladakh tour. So, how do you prepare yourself, your children, and your elders for this epic trip to Ladakh?
We will tell you!
All you have to do is follow the basic and simple rules or tips and tricks we list down below.
Firstly, it is important to pick the right time for your escapade! May to September is the golden window when Ladakh is most welcoming, with pleasant weather and open roads. The weather during these months remains truly enjoyable.
Of these months, if you plan your Ladakh family holidays in the months of May, June, and September, you can even skip the risk of monsoon season. This means you will be able to enjoy all outdoor activities with your family.
Winter gets crazy chilly, and most roads are blocked by snow, so it is advisable to avoid that time.
Ladakh is way up high, and the air gets pretty thin. Acute mountain sickness is a real thing there, but it is nothing to freak out about. Just take it easy the first couple of days, let your bodies acclimatize, and you will be good to go!
Ensure that you have enough sleep, and good food and try not to exert yourself. The key is to provide enough rest to your body so that it gets used to the heights and low oxygen levels.

As much as we love those adorable tiny humans, it is better not to bring infants and toddlers less than 3-4 years of age on this adventure. They are more susceptible to altitude sickness. Their lungs are not grown or mature enough to handle altitude sickness. And you don’t want your trip to turn into a nightmare, right?
Before you hit the road, a visit to the doctor is a wise move. Get everyone checked up to make sure you are all fit and raring to go. Don’t forget to discuss about any medical conditions or allergies with your doctor. It is essential to have all the bases covered, so they can give you the right advice and medication if needed.
When you are traveling with elders in your crew, it is absolutely crucial to dive into their medical history, if any, and have a consultation with a doctor before finalizing the travel plans. If you get a go-ahead from the doctor to travel, ensure that you carry all of their prescribed medicines.
Apart from the prescribed medicines, it is advisable to carry some basic medicines for headache, body ache, fever, flu, common cold, stomach upset, etc. Also pack some painkillers, band-aids, anti-septic lotions, nasal drops, and pain relief sprays in your bag. You know, just in case. It’s better to have them and not need them than vice versa.
In Ladakh, it can sometimes get difficult to get medical help for miles around and therefore we recommend that if you are suffering from chronic heart disease or respiratory ailment like Asthma, you may avoid this destination altogether.
Ladakh’s beauty comes with a price – chilly nights and early mornings. Irrespective of the month you are travelling, it is good to be prepared for cold weather. Especially because the weather in Ladakh is very unpredictable and the temperature can drop anytime.
Don’t be surprised if you find snowfall in the months of July and August at high-altitude passes. Even during summer months, the nights could be very cold. Therefore, pack enough warm clothes – hoodies, jackets, gloves and socks.

Wait, didn’t we just talk about the cold? Yeah, but Ladakh is all about surprises! The sun gets crazy strong during the day and can leave serious sunburns. So, sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats are a must. After all, you want to protect that beautiful face!
Slow and steady wins the race, remember? That goes double for Ladakh. Don’t rush things; allow your body to acclimatize to the high-altitude weather conditions. Take your time to soak in the beauty and let the family enjoy every moment.
If you are travelling to Leh via flight, it is recommended that you take complete rest at the hotel for the first 2 days. If you are travelling via road, your body with gradually acclimatize itself as you ascend.
Note: It is important to note that the roads to Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley and Tso Moriri might be rough which means you will take considerable time to reach there. Consider that while preparing your itinerary.
We recommend you to book your package via a travel agent like us who can make your life a whole lot easier. You might think you are a pro at planning trips, but Ladakh can throw some curveballs. Hiring a travel agent who has good local area knowledge can be really helpful. It will ensure that you don’t miss out on anything on your trip.
We also recommend booking early for your Ladakh holiday package to get great deals and discounts on hotels and flights! Ladakh has been growing in popularity, so getting accommodations and transport can be a pain if you leave it for the last minute.
Staying hydrated is essential during travel, so make sure to drink plenty of water. It is a good idea to keep some sweet treats handy for a little snack along the way. However, try to avoid salty snacks, as they can dehydrate your body. Opt for fresh fruits and light meals instead, which will help keep you feeling refreshed. Be mindful not to overeat, especially before long drives, as it can make you feel uncomfortable during the journey.
If you are travelling with kids, you may want to be extra careful and keep a check on them every few hours. It’s important to watch out for your kid’s activity level, as running and jumping around excessively can lead to exhaustion which is the main cause of acute mountain sickness. They may feel tired and experience shortness of breath, making them more susceptible to altitude sickness.
Therefore, keep a check on them and be vigilant for any signs of acute mountain sickness. If you notice your child acting differently, complaining of body pain, headaches, vomiting, or refusing to eat or drink, these could be symptoms of altitude sickness. In such cases, it is essential to address the situation promptly and take the necessary measures to ensure their well-being.
Bonus tip: If you find notice your child acting differently, consult a pediatrician at Leh only as there is no medical care after that.
Hope for the best, and prepare for the worst! Have a plan for medical emergencies, know the nearest hospitals, and have contact numbers handy, just in case. It is strongly recommended to carry an oxygen cylinder with you while you and your family are travelling to Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley and Tso Moriri. You never know when you might need it. You can easily rent them from Leh.
So, there you have it all! Ladakh is calling, and you are ready to answer. We hope these tips and tricks will help you in your next Ladakh family tour. Grab your loved ones, buckle up, and make memories that will last a lifetime. Safe travels and enjoy your family vacation!
