ATTRACTION OF LADAKH: DHA AND HANU

The only two villages among all the Brokpa villages that are open to tourists, Dha and Hanu are also known as the ‘Land of the Aryans’. Located on the northwest of Leh; at a distance of 163km, locals of these two hamlets are believed to have served Alexander the Great when the king came to Brokpas region around two thousand years ago.

Dominated by Buddhist practices, these two villages are unique in their own ways. Owing to its low altitude, it highly favours the cultivation of grapes, walnuts, apricots, and cherries; both the villages turn into a riot of colours during the harvesting time and celebrates their Harvest Festival in July.

Also, during a wedding in Dha and Hanu, it is the groom who pays the price for the bride, and also women in here enjoys the right to divorce after tying the knot. To Reach Dha and Hanu

One can reach these two gorgeous hamlets by following the trails of the Indus River from 20km before reaching Lamayuru. Heading further, there will be police check-post after around 62km. On reaching this point, visitors can detour and travel another 97km to reach Dha and Hanu.

Stay in Dha and Hanu

Both the villages are devoid of any hotels, guest houses, or other places of retreat. However, tented stays can be arranged with permissions from the local authority.

Best Time to Visit Dha and Hanu

Usually June to October is considered as the ideal time to visit Dha and Hanu in Ladakh. Mercury level decreases to a much extent and the ambience gets clearer and settles down. However, a visit in the month of July is highly advised as these two villages in Ladakh celebrates their Harvest Festival in full glory and merriment in this month.
