Located at an altitude of a whopping 4,595 metres, Tso Moriri Lake is the largest high altitude lake in India. It is around 7 km wide and 19 km long. It is located at a distance of approximately 250 km from Leh. The place is full of flora and fauna as it falls under the wetland reserve.
The best time to explore all the offerings of Tso Moriri lake is during the months of June to September. The season of tourism in Ladakh is in full flow during this time. However, every season adds its own charm to the place and we at Eladakh Tourism have broken down the weather in detailed pieces of information below.
With the onset of summers, the ice on the lake starts to melt and transforms the lake into a multi-shade palette of blue colours. By the end of May and the beginning of June, the temperature remains comfortable with an average of 20°C to 25°C and is apt to experience the beauty of the place. The homestays, hotels and guest houses are fully operational. The public transport services too are available largely during these months. The day temperature during summer is moderately warm and gets cooler by the evening.

Ladakh falls in a rain shadow zone. That is why it does not experience heavy showers at all. That is why it is a great season to visit Tso Moriri Lake. Because of the skies being clear, you can behold far-fetched views of snow-capped mountains and lush green open fields. This time attracts a lot of migratory birds and other wildlife that can be witnessed on your visit here such as bar-headed geese, Brahmni ducks, the great crested grebe and the black-necked cranes. You can also visit the Tibetan-Buddhist Korzok Monastery in this time and enjoy the view as it overlooks the lake with changing hues.
The place is difficult and harsh to survive in winters. Lake Tso Moriri remains mostly frozen and only a couple of cemented accommodation is available. Hence, people do not largely prefer this season for a visit. The temperature drops down to sub-zero levels. The average temperature ranges between -10°C to – 25°C. Only if you do not mind the hard cold winds, you can visit the lake to admire the frozen beauty. The road to Tso Moriri is open throughout the year but you need to check if there has been any heavy snow at Tanglang La. The road from there may have been blocked by snowfall.
