Bérénice Debras of Le Figaro, the magazine of France’s second-largest national newspaper presented a rare and optimistic image of Kashmir. The on-site report titled “In Indian Kashmir, a history woven of thread and water” sheds light on the region’s gradual transformation into a tourist destination after years of conflict. The article reflects the positive changes in Kashmir valley and the changing dynamics of Srinagar along with the iconic Dal Lake.

Debras highlighted that Srinagar, once a ‘forgotten paradise, is now welcoming tourists after decades of conflict. The symbolic G20 held in Srinagar in May is a sign that security and stability are returning to the region.

It also reported the cultural ties between Srinagar and France through the production of shawls. Kashmir’s shawls have been a significant part of the history as 80% of the production was exported to France in 1861.

The report also highlighted the iconic Mughal Garden of Shalimar and the incredible houseboats. It emphasized the historical and adaptive evolution of the Kashmir Valley. The return of Bollywood to the valley also signifies the renewed interest in Kashmir’s offerings. The article concluded by saying that Srinagar aims to transform after decades of tragedies.
