The shoreline of Dal Lake is about 9.6 mi and is encompassed by a boulevard lined with Mughal-era gardens, parks, houseboats and hotels. The nearby Mughal Gardens – Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh offer scenic views of the lake as well. These gardens were built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jahangir. From houseboats cruising along the lake to colourful shikaras, you can experience it all. The month of April is the beginning of the summer season and the climate is perfect to spend a few hours amidst the tranquil, crystal-clear water of the lake. During the winter season, the temperature sometimes reaches −11 °C and ends up freezing the lake. But in the month of April, you can rest assured.
Dal Lake covers an area of 16 square kilometres, including its floating gardens. It is also part of a natural wetland. The floating gardens, known as “Raad” in Kashmiri, blossom with lotus flowers. The wetland is divided by causeways into four basins – Gagribal, Lokut Dal, Bod Dal and Nagin. However, Nigeen Lake, also known as Nagin Lake is considered an independent lake. Lokut-dal and Bod-dal each have an island in the centre, known as Rup Lank and Sona Lank.

Nigeen Lake on the other hand is a haven for nature lovers and an extension of Dal Lake. It is covered with an array of willow and poplar trees and offers a peaceful setting, away from the commotion of busy city life. Even Nigeen Lake has a houseboat accommodation facility. So, if you do love the lake a lot you can also stay back there to enjoy its beauty at night, right from the window of your houseboat.
This will also make for a unique travel experience for you. Even here you can have a Shikara ride. The lake flows to the west of Dal Lake and is connected to Dal Lake via a strait.
The valley of Kashmir has a sub-tropical climate and the summer is hot. The temperature starts soaring in the month of March itself and by April it is peak summer season. The maximum temperature in summer can go as high as 45 degrees Celsius in Jammu and 14 to 30 degrees Celsius in Kashmir.
This makes it the perfect time to be at the lake. The water brings a sense of cold air around and the Shikara ride will just add to the fun. It will take you away from the heat in the valley and dipping your hand in the cold water while taking the ride will just be another fun activity you will enjoy. Also, a swim will definitely make your day.
